Orthognathic surgery

Orthognathic surgery (orthognathic = straight jaws) treats jaw deformities, whether due to underdevelopment or overdevelopment. A dentofacial deformity can be defined as a condition where the facial skeleton deviates from normal, when there is a dental malocclusion, or when facial appearance is severely affected.

Dentofacial deformities can be divided into minor (such as a chin projection deficiency) or severe (such as a cleft palate). Since jaw movement also affects tooth movement, orthognathic surgery is usually performed in conjunction with orthodontics.

Orthognathic surgery techniques allow for the sectioning of facial bones and repositioning them into the most appropriate position. These procedures are currently performed exclusively intraorally, thus avoiding external scars, and rigid fixation methods are used, in most cases avoiding the intermaxillary fixation common a few years ago. The average hospital stay is approximately 2-3 days.
